How not to treat your best customers

In today’s mail was a card from Brooks Brothers clothing store announcing a private sale to their best customers. There were two things wrong with it.

First, it was addressed in the following manner:
Lalvaradogmailcom Alvarado
123 Country Club Dr.
Mission Viejo, CA 92692

Um, not my first name. Not even close to my first name. Somehow they took my email address, mushed it all together, and turned it into my first name.

Second, the offer was already outdated. The card says the discount is valid from October 20th – 24th. Today is October 24th. Well, it's still good for today, but do I really want to go out in today's wet weather?

The card starts out by saying, “We’d love to see you again. You’re one of our most valued customers, and we’d like to thank you with the enclosed savings card… “

If I was really one of their most valued customers don’t you think they could at least get my name right? And if they really want me to come in they should have sent me the savings card well in advance.

If someone really is one of your best customers, treat them with respect. Make sure you get their name right. Let them know about shows that you will be doing well in advance. Treat them like a friend, not just some name on a list.
