The Creative Spark and the Chromatic Scale

I got to observe something really interesting last night. I am busily in the process of creating new artwork for this summer’s Art-A-Fair Festival. As usual, my main theme is music. My boyfriend and I were talking about some ideas for the new pieces. He suggested doing music notes in different colors in a series, maybe even a rainbow of colors. That started my creative juices flowing. I immediately came up with a title for the piece: Harmony.

As soon as I said that, his eyes lit up. In fact, his entire body lit up. He looked at me and said, “Chromatic Scale.” How absolutely brilliant!

I have felt that creative spark so many times in myself, but I had never seen it happen in someone else. It was a beautiful thing to see.

Now my brain is really working overtime on this idea. At first I was thinking of doing a flat quilt. Now I am thinking more of a sculpture. Fabric in the colors of the chromatic scale would be wrapped around tubes cut to the appropriate length to create each note of the scale. The tubes would be mounted on a wood base. Then you would use mallets to actually play music.

I’m not sure how much the fabric would affect the sound quality of the tubes. I may have to experiment with some pipe before investing in the tubes. (They’re called Boomwhackers.) I have just three weeks to get this done. I sure wish I had some more time!
